SCOUTS SA ANNUAL REPORT 2016 21 RADIO ACTIVITIES Josh Smart Leader In Charge The Scout Radio Activities Team provides communications and equipment support to major Branch events together with bringing radio based programs to Youth Members. Communications support to events included; Easter Venture, NONT (Night Observation Navigation Tour), Scout Section Branch Hike. Our equipment was also utilised at many other events including Australian Venture, Gangshow, Sandblast, Cohen Cup, and Rowing Regatta. Jamboree on the Air/Jamboree on the Internet (JOTA/JOTI) is still our biggest event of the year. In 2015, 1.35 million Scouts and Guides participated in this event, making it the largest Scouting event in the world. Locally we had in excess of 1000 participants. ROCK CLIMBING SECTION Glenn Hordacre Branch Commissioner • Climbing Wall Our time has been very busy over the last year having been utilised by Scouting and Non Scouting events. Our committed core team of Phil Burke and Michael Woodward has clocked up 800+ (combined) hours running this activity over the last year. Well-done Team. Courses available: • Level 1 Mountain Biking – 2 Days • Level 2 Mountain Biking (Advanced Off Road Riding) – 2 Days • Level 3 Mountain Bike Guide Training and Assessment – 2 Day Training • + 1 Day Assessment • Level 4 Mountain Bike Instructor Training and Assessment – 2 Day Training + 1 Day Assessment LAND YACHTING Peter Smith Branch Commissioner A great year working in conjunction with the Air Activity Section, Land Yachting now has a very established base at Armstrong. To date we have had close to 300 Youth and Adult members take part in the Land Yacht activity. We continue to have an enviable fleet of 15 Land Yachts, plus quad bikes to assist in recovery work as well as towing the yachts when the wind drops. We now have a Land Yachting blanket badge, which is proving to be very popular and a participation certificate that is signed individually to remind you of the wonderful time you had at Armstrong Land Yachting. CYCLING SECTION Simon Goodwin Branch Commissioner Simon has very recently been appointed Branch Commissioner — Cycling. Cycling is one of the newest and most exciting adventurous activities offered in Scouting. Simon and his team are responsible for the quality delivery and support of the Cycling programs to Joeys, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers, Rovers and Leaders ensuring that these activities are undertaken in a safe manner. We will continue to move forward with the delivery of Nationally recognised training. His aim is to provide Scouts with a first class training program, whilst putting Scouts SA in the forefront of innovation within the field of youth development and Cycling/ Mountain Bike training. Simon and his team will provide not only fun and adventure but also a viable training package, putting Scouts SA truly on the map on a global scale. Activities available: • Learn to Ride – All ages • Bike Maintenance • Mountain Biking Skills Sessions • Day and Multi-day Mountain Biking Trips Expedition award preparation and mentoring (Cycling)
